Description
Local Photographer Jim Bailey will be our featured artist at the Arts Council of Greater Palatka Gallery Exhibit for November. Opening reception night is Nov. 15, with refreshments and a meet and greet with the artist from 5:30 to 7:30. The show will be available for viewing until Dec. 12th.
Jim photographs local scenes, plants and birds you see every day in our community with his own unique eye for detail and perspective. He photographs viewpoints that you might have missed as you pass by on your daily travels. When asked what inspires his photography, Jim Bailey stated, “I enjoy viewers looking at my work and noticing the unusual angle, the differences in what we normally view from eye level”. When asked what the most challenging aspect of his photography is, Jim replied “Pleasing myself is the toughest part. I may like two or three shots out of a hundred that I shoot.”
Jim Bailey was born in New York, but the family moved to Florida when he was 6 years old, when his Father came to work at Cape Canaveral. Jim’s Elementary and High School years were spent in Cocoa, Fl. The family eventually moved to Putnam County. He attended St. Johns Community College in 1972, earned a Degree in Law Enforcement, and went on to have a 28-year career with Florida Power and Light.
Bailey’s interest in photography began at an early age, as his Dad was a photographer. Jim enjoyed helping his father process 35mm film in the darkroom. Jim’s interest in photography was sporadic during his working and raising children years, but retirement has given him the opportunity to concentrate full time on taking photos. His first cameras were a 35mm Canon A1, a Canon AE1 Program and a Nikon N90S, he still owns those. Today most of his work is taken with a DSLR Canon 80D.
Evelyn Snyder, Gallery Curator for the Arts Council says, “I asked Jim what were his favorites of all his photos. His reply… the Moon on a cold night, and Bioluminescent Mushrooms in the Ravine Gardens, known as Jill-O-Lantern mushrooms. That gives you an idea of the diversity of Baileys’ subject matter.”
Jim Bailey’s future goal for his work is to continue showing his photos for folks to enjoy. He loves showing things people may not get to see otherwise. He also wants to photograph waterfalls, since we don’t have any here in Florida.
The Arts Council of Greater Palatka is located at 216 Reid St. in the historic Larimer Arts Center. Regular hours are 10am to 4pm Monday through Thursday and during special events.
